Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS)
Changes to Florida Teen Driver Education - Starting July 1, 2025
Big changes are coming to Florida's driver education requirements for teens. Beginning July 1, 2025, a new 6-hour course called Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) will begin replacing the current 4-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course for drivers under 18. The TLSAE course will no longer be available to teens after July 31, 2025.
We're here to make this transition smooth and stress-free. Our state-approved courses are easy to complete and fully compliant with Florida law—so you can get your learner's permit with confidence.
What This Means For You
- If you're 18 or older:
No changes. You can continue to take the TLSAE course without interruption.
- If you're under 18 and already enrolled in TLSAE:
You can still complete the course through July 31, 2025. As long as your certificate is valid when you apply for your permit or license, it will be accepted.
- If you're under 18 and haven't enrolled yet:
TLSAE will only be available for a limited time. Once the DETS course receives full state approval, TLSAE will no longer be offered to minors.
- Between now and July 31, 2025:
Teens under 18 can complete either TLSAE or DETS, as long as the course is finished by the deadline.
- After July 31, 2025:
DETS will be the only accepted course for teens under 18 applying for a license or permit.
What Is the DETS Course?
The Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course is Florida's new legal requirement for first-time teen drivers. Our DETS course will:
- Fully align with updated Florida licensing laws
- Emphasize defensive driving, hazard recognition, and emergency maneuvers
- Include interactive and engaging content that supports real-world safety
- Meet or exceed educational standards set by the Florida Department of Education
Why the Update?
These changes reflect recent updates to Florida Statutes § 322.095 and § 322.1615, requiring a more comprehensive driver education experience for teens. The new DETS course must match or exceed the state's Traffic Safety-Classroom 1900300 standards, aiming to improve teen driver safety and reduce traffic incidents statewide.
We'll keep this page updated with the latest information as DETS becomes available. Stay tuned—and drive safely!
